While I doubt that all women have a pair of Museum Shoes in their closet, I must admit that I own my own fair share of these. They are a particular failing of mine. These are shoes that are fabulous to look at but are impractical for regular wear. Some of them are simple fun while others literally take my breath away with their beauty. They all have a place in my closet because even though it is a challenge to find occasions and outfits to wear them, they are too precious for me to give up.
Here are my Museum Shoes…in a wide range of prices from bargain-bin up to Ouch!

The wedges and embroidered pumps find more actual wear-time than the enamel-heeled Maryjane or crystal pumps - although I only occasionally wear wedges since they can look clunky (all the more potential canvas!). There are just not that many occasions for a soccer-mom living in a small town to get all dressed up - more’s the pity.
So, is it any surprise that part of the wall-to-wall bookcase plans that we are drafting for our home also tentatively include a corner curio for displaying some of my favorite Museum Shoes?
It’s certainly better than leaving them to gather dust.

The wedge itself may have decorations or designs, and can be made with molded plastic or rubber. Sometimes wedge heels and platform shoes are confused. The two designs are not mutually exclusive. Wedge heels can be platform shoes if the sole of the shoe under the balls and toes of the foot is raised above the ground by a thickened bottom. Wedge heels are not always platforms. Sometimes the wedge merely elevates the upper portion of the foot, descending to a thin sole underneath the balls and toes.
Wedge heels are a popular fashion choice, never really going completely out of style. They often provide a bit more stability than the standard heel, because the wedge extends out from the entire sole of the shoe. Instead of having to balance on the point of small heel, the wedge allows you to firmly place your full heel on the ground. If you’re unused to heels, wedge heels can be a good place to start. As with any heels, the higher they are, the more likely you may turn an ankle if you don’t keep your ankles stable.
Like the single heel, weight distribution in the wedge heel is still primarily on the balls of the feet and the toes. The higher the wedge heels, the more weight you carry mostly on the front of your feet. Yet many women find wedge heels more comfortable than stiletto or kitten heel styles and those with rubberized wedges can provide a little bit of spring. Wedge heels on a small rubber platform can also be quite comfortable to wear.

For me, it’s no small thing to go to a shoe store. I feel like I did when I was 5 and at Toys R Us. My main problem is coming out without at least two pair of shoes. And, even worse, coming out without the shoes I went in to buy. I’m just like that with shoes. Especially women’s wedge shoes or platform shoes.
Some people like a certain shoe because it’s comfortable. Others because it looks fantastic. I love wedges because they’re both, comfortable and gorgeous. I get height, without falling over on my face (like stillettos make me). I get a lovely style of shoe that is easy to walk in because it supports the arch of my foot. And I get a shoe that goes with almost anything I own, from work dresses to jeans. And that is why I love wedges.
